This paper is to examine a principled way of accounting for the English /r/-linking covering both linking /r/ and intrusive /r/. The first part of the paper is provided to observe that the /r/ is interpreted as [-consonantal] as opposed to [+consonantal], which has been supported by a majority of phonologists including Chomsky & Halle (1968). This observation gives rise to the claim that the /r/ can belong to the glides, forming a natural class of /w, y, r/. This is plausibly supported by the acoustic findings based on the formants, which show a sharp contrast between /l/ and /r/. On the basis of /r/ as [-consonantal], this paper is further to explore that neither /w/ nor /y/ can combine with the following /r/ or the preceding /r/ in the identical node of syllable structure. This may be part of a general phenomenon explained by the obligatory contour principle. Given this, this paper shows that the /r/-linking in English can be accounted for with the introduction of the syntactic concept of c-command : /r/-linking occurs when the /r/ c-commands both preceding and following vowels in syllable structure.
