Objective: The aim of this study is to propose a way of classifying various information displays used in automobiles on the basis of human-machine interaction. Background: As vehicles are becoming smart and intelligent, their functions reach beyond transportation and driver interactions with vehicles are getting sophisticated. To design improved HMI for better communication with vehicles, it is preceded to analyze information gathered from various in-vehicle displays having different modalities. Method: Driver’s interactions are categorized into groups according to their purpose and abstract functions. It is identified the information required during interactions within each function. The type and modality of information given from primary and auxiliary displays are evaluated in terms of compatibility of coding and multidimensionality. Results: The results showed that traditional in-vehicle information displays (IVIS) are not appropriate for delivering multidimensional and functionally organized information. Traditional IVIS needs to be improved in ways of relieving excessive reliance on visual channel and unnecessary redundancy of information. Application: The findings from this study could be used for designing multimodal and intelligent HMI system to alleviate cognitive burden of driver and make high quality of user experience.
