Objective: This research study focuses on an analytic method for evaluating a degree of Design Compatibility or User Adaption. The term, Design Compatibility is defined as an object’s adjusting processes / characteristics to subjects. When immature technologies are introduced or a new developed prototype is tested, subjects may be insufficient for installing desired UI/UXs. This paper provides how an object’s adjusting tendencies are measured and analyzed with time series approaches, in order to be used in new product development (NPD). Background: Design Compatibility issues are crucial in NPD processes with comparatively immature interface technologies. The evaluation and measurement of users’ adjusting ability for developing product(s) can help the selection and design of installed interfaces. However, most of the existing measuring methods are based on questionnaire methods or experts’ investigations. Even though these methods have several advantages, they are unsuitable in NPD processes requiring short developing cycle time. This paper suggests an effective method handling User Adaption data in terms of time series analyses. Method: A device with contactless interfaces is considered as a newly developing subject. When objects use the developing device, data including accuracy and Type Ⅰ/Ⅱ error are measured and are analyzed using a proposed time series model. The model from the suggested time series methods is used as a quantitative model for selecting better alternative designs. Results and Conclusion: The Design Compatibility related data can be captured as a time series based model with a suggested smoothing method and data conversion from non-stationary data to stationary data. Application: The suggested method and results can be applied to NPD supportive system. Instead of the repetition of experiments, the usage of a Design Compatibility model can reduce overall NPD cycle time and contributes to reduce a database size for capturing experiment data, efficiently.
