Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate user needs and contexts for applying a gesture interface. Background: Recently, gesture interfaces have received attention in the academic field as well as in the industrial filed. However, studies on user needs and suitable contexts for applying the gesture interface are not enough yet. Method: In this study, we used Focus Group Interview (FGI) to investigate the user needs and the suitable contexts from users. We recruited twenty-seven participants with consideration of various ages and occupations, and divided them into four groups with six or seven participants each. The participants freely stated their opinions with regard to where and why the gesture interface is helpful in daily life. Results/Conclusion: As a result, nine user needs and eleven suitable contexts were derived from the users. The user needs consist of avoiding annoyingness, safety, naturalness, sanitary, reducing physical load, ease to control, emotional satisfaction, entertainment, and saving. Also, eleven suitable contexts could be classified with 4 places (public establishment, dark place, noisy place, quiet place), 3 tasks (driving, multi-task, cooperation work), and 4 circumstances (dangerous, emergency, holding something with both hands, beyond one’s reach). Application: The results of this study can be used as a base line data to select devices or functions for applying a gesture interface.
