‘Cognitive rent’ is a term used in cognitive capitalism’s value theory to describe the extra profit generated in a knowledge-based economy. This article examines the exact meaning of ‘cognitive rent’ using the paradigm for common resources. The author first proposes that the sharing economy found in a knowledge-based society can be understood under the paradigm for common resources. The author then argues that cognitive rent can be regarded as a special type of Marxian differential rent, a kind of ground rent, and is therefore compatible with the value theory of Marx as applied to a knowledge-based economy. Finally, the ‘false social value’ of cognitive rent is interpreted as a source of basic income that can be taxed.
