Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of Work related Carpal Tunnel Syndrome(CTS) in VDT workers, investigate their working environments and find preventive measures. Background: In recent years, CTS is increasing, but there is a lack of research on status of workstations with VDT(Video Display Terminal) and the worker"s recognition for MSDs(Musculoskeletal disorders). Method: This study classified VDT workers into 6categories, 13working groups, then researched a field survey of 385 workers and analyzed risk factors of their working environments, and musculoskeletal pain of physical positions. Results: (1) Most VDT workers do not still have much information about MSDs, (2) The most painful positions are neck and shoulder, (3) The rate of pain on the Hands/Wrists which could occur CTS is up to 21.0%(51.8% by case ratio), (4) The rate of using "hand rest" of keyboard and mouse(which is one of the representative protecting apparatus for CTS) is up to 7.8% and 18.5%, (5) Intensity of illumination is about 611lux on average, but there is a big gap among the working groups(min 170lux ~ max4,800 lux). Conclusion: These results showed that preventive action and public relations for MSDs(including CTS) of the investigation fields are necessary and this study could be used as a basic data for establishing preventive polices for MSDs of VDT workers.
