The purpose of this study is to examine the modernity of dress investigating the values of western fashion and Korean dress in modernization. Accordingly, it would provide a better understanding of the modern culture with its composite aspects. The results can be summarized as follows; 1. Modernity is a seperate concept from modern, modernism, modernization, includes the socioeconomic modernity as a affirmitive concept and aesthetic modernity as a negative concept. Modernity approved, the doctrine of progress and reason the confidence in the beneficial possibilities of science anad technology, and pragmatism, spoke for the brougeois in the affirmitive point of view. Also, modernity distrusted the tradition in the negative point of view. 2. Modernity of western fashion can be studied from two viewpoints, fashion as a process of diffusion and fashion as an object. Fashion is analysed as the preference of change and novelty, mass production, mass consumption, mass diffusion and dress reform movements from the former point of view. It is analysed as dress reform movement, plane dress form and the appearence of individual fashion designers from the latter point of view. They can be summarized as change, function, and popularity. 3. Modernity of Korean dress is the consciousness of the change of fashion, the appearence of the fashoin designers, modern dress shops and westernization in dress. Dress reform movement has composite meanings because its purpose was found to achieve the functional, easy and popular clothing. Also, they can be summarized as change, function, and popularity. The differnce between western fashion and Korean dress is what in western culture, the modernity of fashion as a process of diffusion formed the basis of the formation of modern dress as an object, in Korean dress, it didn`t. Because in Korea, the form of western fashion was borrowed first rather than understanding the western modernity.
