During the Korean War, North Korea Air Force(NKAF) was collapsed within three months after war beginning. It was caused mainly by U.S air force. But real combat power of NKAF which was made by USSR so weak. How could understand about NKAF’s weak power. It is a big question to me.
This study’s purposes is find the cause of NKAF’s early collapses. Especially, this study try to find at the very passive support of USSR.
To this purpose, this study researched USSR’s support against NKAF dividedly by period and section. Based on this evaluation, USSR’s support against NKAF is very passive and weakly until Kim il sung visit Moscow, and meet Stalin March 1949.
Active support from USSR was only one year before the outbreak of Korean war. But this support is not proceed smoothly. Also USSR not acted normally by weapon supply agreement between North Korea and USSR.
At the beginning time, NKAF is absolute superior than South Korean AF in the point of quantity and quality of combat power. But in the side of quality power – pilot number and skill - is not perfect. And so NKAF was not repose properly to US Air Force early take part in Korean war. As a result, NKAF was collapsed early. Between USSR’s passive support against NKAF and early collapses of NKAF is a causal relationship to each other.
There is four reason that USSR’s passive support against NKAF. First, there is sensitive of the international political situation at that time. Second, there is North Korea’s low strategic value for the USSR. Third, USSR’s economic difficulties because of USSR-Germany war, fourth, optimistic prospects of war because South Korea Air force is low.
This study confirmed once again that NKAF’s development in five years after the liberation war is the USSR’s support. And so NKAF’s has a enough air power to cause the attack against South Korea.
But, USSR’s support against NKAF was very passive. The result was the NKAF has collapsed war in three months. And so USSR’s 64th combat air force corps attend to the Korean war instead of NKAF.
