Korean bamboo cane craft(竹裝工藝) has been known as a distinct style of craftwork manufactured by using black bamboo(烏竹), and 80-90% of the process is currently being manufactured by hand, because it has to be produced in order to utilize its natural color. Although it has been highly acclaimed and possesses superior aesthetical value, its technology has been passed down to only a small minority of people through apprenticeships, because of its meticulous manufacturing process, comparatively low work effectiveness and appropriateness of price. When considering such circumstances, a sense of duty is felt from those who have a great deal of pride in their work and craftsmanship.
Now that modern industries have become computerized, however, it is not easy to maintain the status quo. Because of such reasons, it has been changed to use black bamboo in one part(key point) rather than a whole part(high-quality) in order to make it easy to manufacture and convenient for both purchasing and sales of simple accessory and jewelry, and demands on such products have increased rapidly. Among the many changes in the market, in accordance with governmental policy on vocational education, vocational education at elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as black bamboo craft design departments of training colleges have been established as a means to expand its base. A bright prospect is not only expected in the commodities market, but also in the educational field, if the emotional aspect of black bamboo can be grafted onto its symbolism and history(story-telling). In order to achieve this, experts from various fields including copywriters, product designers, craftsmen, marketing experts, and managers need to collaborate together to develop it into a single content, and it can be established if a culture fostering policy, which is in operation, is fully utilized. In addition, a bright future to expand into the international market is expected, if emotional value has been enhanced by adding the meaning of black bamboo, and balance between props of future master artisans who have completed education and high-quality works of master artisans have been achieved.
