This study examines the rhetorical strategies of Democrat candidate Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate John McCain in the 2008 U.S. presidential debates. First, with an unprecedent financial crisis and a sustaining war in Iraq, it describes how both candidates and their staffs prepared the rhetorical strategies prior to the debates.
Second, this paper investigates debate issues, strategies, and rhetorical attacks and defenses qualitatively in detail. Third, it discusses strengths and weaknesses of the various verbal strategies employed by both candidates, such as metaphor, synecdoche, antithesis, repitition, redefintion, vividification, humor, vision. Forth, in accessing debate performance of the candidates, it discusses impacts of nonverbal strategies conducted by both candidates, such as eye contacts, gestures, listening, facial expressions, kinetic movements on the stage, and paralinguistic behaviors. Fifth, it argues that the meta-communication strategies, that focus more on image than contents, have been crucial factors in an television debate era.. Sixth, it claims that quadrennial presidential debates have been an important institution in the presidential campaigns, that attracts tens of millions voters to watch.
