Since 1970, South Korea has gone through rapid urbanization leading to the new town development. However, the original downtown lost its vitality with the decline in population and with the population"s movement to the new downtown. This issue has recently been actively discussed in many areas on the theme of urban regeneration.
The old Jeju University Hospital, located in the old downtown Jeju, was studied in the conceptual framework of urban regeneration techniques, and the public library was analyzed, which is a base for mutual cooperation for urban regeneration and integration. Based on this ideas, this study aims to provide the basic data that can be applied when planning a public library in th old downtown. For this reason, comparative analysis is conveyed in terms of site plannning, space program, and the form of composition based on literature reviews and case studies of four developed European works and four domestic public libraries.
As a result, this study suggests the spacial properties of a public library be integrated with elements of urban space and functionality by using urban regeneration techniques with several factors.
