This research examines and compares preservation efforts in central Santa Fe over the course of the 20th century by studying the urban planning efforts, the 1912 Master Plan and the Railyard Redevelopment Plan, for tourism motion in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Both plans are closely related to the social and economic environments of the city, and heritage resources served as the economic resource as well as the cultural identity of the regional development. However, the Railyard Redevelopment plan was the valorization of the past for tourism development and community development, and at the same time, efforts to addresses heritage use, conservation, and community wellbeing. The research will analyze the changing motivations and pressures of tourism developments that utilize heritage resources to meet diverse social and economic needs, which are already difficultfor matured touristic cities, but also become fast-approaching challenges to many communities that rely on the presentation of a selected cultural heritage resource.
