Expansion of news is undeniable. The news breaks through all kinds of physical barriers with the help of digital revolution. News format represented by textual one has evolved into such integrated ones as hypertext, infographics, and digital writings. Also is it virtually impossible not to expose into news and its impact regardless of location, time and preference. This paper in this context projects the idea of ‘Newsology’ as an independent field of study.
Modern academic disciplines such as economics, psychology and sociology owe much to social, economic and political changes resulted from the industrial revolution. Unprecedented needs for making sense of and applying for transformations made it happen. The same logic can be employed to the news. Both lack of specialty and mingling with various fields also help to the emergence of newsology as a systematic and inclusive discipline. It is the reason why the second step attempts to sorting out the differences and similarities among related fields. On the last part, it explores possible sub-fields like news security, news diplomacy and news literacy in way of articulating.
Until the mid 20th century, even psychology was not fully considered as systematic department in university. The evolution of academics shows, however, the power of imagination which drives vision into reality. Lots of steps along with difficulties are inevitable in the road for newsology. This paper will be likely to be a crucial bridge for it. The authors hope this essay to spur further discussion with insights.

뉴스가 팽창하고 있다. 디지털미디어의 확산과 더불어 뉴스는 마침내 매체의 장벽을 넘었다. 텍스트 중심의 뉴스 포맷은 영상, 오디오와 인포그래픽이 통합된 형태로 발전했다. 뉴스 플랫폼이 다양해짐에 따라 각 플랫폼에 적합한 뉴스 포맷들이 등장했고, 뉴스의 형식이나 내용도 파격적인 변화를 겪고 있다. 스마트폰의 대중화와 더불어 이제 언제 어디서나 뉴스를 접할 수 있게 되었다.
오늘날 우리가 알고 있는 대부분의 학문은 특정한 시기, 사회적 필요성, 기존 연구성과의 축적 및 꾸준한 이론적 정교화라는 공통점을 갖고 있다. 디지털혁명을 통해 뉴스의 일상화가 진행되고 있는 현 시점에서 뉴스에 특화된, 뉴스와 관련한 제반 현상을 논리적으로 이해하기 위한 뉴스학(newsology)을 제기하는 까닭이다. 그러나 기존의 학문이 아닌 뉴스학을 굳이 말해야 하는 이유가 있을까? 뉴스학에서 동원할 수 있는 이론적 및 실천적 자원은 무엇일까? 또한 뉴스학이 비전 있는 학문이 될 것이라는 근거는 무엇인가?
이 글은 크게 세 부분으로 구분되어 있다. 먼저, 과거 심리학, 경제학 및 사회학 등과 마찬가지로 ‘뉴스’라는 공공재를 둘러싼 생태계, 이해관계자, 현상 및 확장 가능성 등이 성숙하고 있는가를 살펴본다. 그다음으로, 기존의 언론학, 커뮤니케이션학 그리고 정보커뮤니케이션학과 뉴스학의 차별성과 특성을 분석한다. 마지막으로, 뉴스학이 전공학문으로 정착할 만한 학문적 자원을 갖고 있는가를 파악하기 위해 이 학문을 구성하는 주요 주제들을 살펴봄으로써 뉴스학의 가능성에 관한 이론적 탐색을 시도하고자 한다.
