This study aims to analyze the life conditions of multi-cultural families in Seoul. The raw data for this study is from survey on the state of multi-cultural families in South Korea 2012 conducted by statistics Korea and Korean women’s development institute.
The results of the study are as follows : Seoul occupies the second position followed by Gyeonggi-do in the scale of multi-cultural families in South Korea. Multi-cultural families are being differentiated rapidly in Seoul. Specially immigrant youths hold a very important position of differentiating multi-cultural families, but they are apt to be in crisis without supporting from their families and communities. Moreover Korean Chineses and transnational marriage men are placed at the centre of a contradiction in the relation to their typicality as marriage migrants. Even though many of them have lived in Seoul, they have been isolated from multi-cultural policy until now. It’s because they are out of stereo type of marriage migrants in South Korea.
Multi-cultural families of Seoul are in a lot of trouble with family intimacy, job researching, participating in community and so forth. Most of all, financial self-reliance support policies are the crucial requirement for them.
We have a multi cultural society when we should have aimed for an intercultural society. Therefore this study tried to suggest policies not only for marriage migrants but also for former inhabitant Koreans in Seoul.
