Most previous studies on ramp slopes have considered only ascending ramps even though descending ramps are also important in wheelchair driving on ramps. Effects of ramp slope on wheelchair users could be different between ascent and descent, especially for subjective ratings. This study therefore compared ascending and descending ramps with a focus on physical discomfort and psychological anxiety to determine whether or not descending ramp should be considered in suggesting appropriate ramp slope. Thirty participants ascended and descended five ramps with different slopes (1:6, 1:8, 1:10, 1:12, and 1:14), and reported on physical discomfort and psychological anxiety for both the ascent and descent. The effects of ramp slope were generally similar between the ascent and descent with respect to both physical discomfort and psychological anxiety. Physical discomfort in ascent was higher than that in descent for all ramp slopes, however, psychological anxiety in ascent was not. There was a high correlation between ascent and descent in terms of both physical discomfort and psychological anxiety. Based on these results, we concluded that physical discomfort in descent may not need to be considered when determining appropriate ramp slopes. The results from ascent could not include the results from descent for psychological anxiety. It may be acceptable to consider psychological anxiety only in ascent due to the high correlation between ascent and descent.
