The purpose of this study was to develop a fingertip vibrotactile stimulator using a flat-coil without deteriorating the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and not disturb the proper function of the stimulator during MR acquisition. The developed vibrotactile stimulator consists of three units: control unit, drive unit, and flatcoil vibrator. The control unit controls stimulation parameters such as frequency, intensity, and time and these signals modulated and transmitted to drive unit via optical cable. The drive was positioned in MR shield room and supplies electric current to drive the flat-coil. The flat-coil was fabricated on a printed circuit board using and etching process and laid on patient table to stimulate the fingertip. Interactive effects between MR system and developed stimulator were tested for two cases; that is an operation condition or not in operation condition. Images were obtained using the field echo planar imaging method using a 3 T MR scanner and the signal-tonoise ratio was calculated. Since the entire system is a small, easy to installation and controls the stimulation parameters, light weight, low cost, operated stably in MR circumstance without affecting MR images, it is expected to be widely used in human brain studies of tactile cognition and perception.
