Seventy-one Hong Kong taxi drivers were surveyed with regard to sleep habits, work schedules, unsafe driving behaviors and motor vehicle accidents. Results showed that approximately half (53.5%) the taxi drivers suffered from excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and that taking a nap during work breaks could significantly reduce this problem (p < 0.01). Exceeding the speed limit was the most common traffic offence among the six unsafe driving behaviors studied. In general, taxi drivers with high body mass index (BMI) and poor sleep quality were more likely to drive in an unsafe manner. Night-shift drivers were more likely to run red lights but less likely to overtake without indicating. The overall accident rate was high for the taxi drivers surveyed here, with about 66% of them having had at least one accident experience within the previous two years. Red-light running was the only factor that significantly increased the crash risk (OR=3.93; 95% CI: 1.11-13.93) for taxi drivers.
