Objective: The aim of this study is to provide validity analysis of the vehicle and physiological data for assessment of drivers’ drowsiness. Background: According to the Korea Transportation Safety Authority’s report (2012), 22% of the highway traffic accident are caused by drowsiness. Drivers’ characteristic while drowsy driving should be studied. Method: An experiment was built under a simulated driving environment. Four subjects participated in two experimental sessions requiring two levels of sleep amount (above 7 hours of sleep versus below 4 hours of sleep) prior to the experimental day. Subjects are expected to drive on the highway from Seoul interchange to Cheonan interchange at 80km/h. Physiological data collected during the experiment includes heart rate, eye’s blinking and PERCLOS (Percentage of Eye Closure). Obtained vehicle and physiological data are analyzed using paired t-test or Wilcoxon’s signed-ranks test. Results: Statistically significant results were shown in velocity, gas pedal magnitude, gas pedal count, steering wheel angle, blinking, PERCLOS, conversation status, indicating that sleep-deprived drivers showed different vehicle and physiological data from well-rested drivers. Conclusion: The present study showed potential of the vehicle and physiological data for assessing drowsiness. Further experiments are scheduled to increase the sample power. Application: The validated vehicle and physiological data will be included in the drivers’ drowsiness assessment algorithm.
