Objective: In this study the effect of the level of luminance and transmission on display color perception would be analyzed. Background: Various types of display such as flexible, transparent and stretchable display are developed as the display panel technique grows. Displayed images on transparent display are more significantly affected by surround condition compared to other types of display. Hence the factors to be considered such as surround condition, haze, transmission are more than others. However the studies for these factors are still in its infancy. Method: It is impossible to conduct this study with various levels of transmission and surround condition by commercial transparent display. Therefore the transparent display was simulated on LCD display. The display was set for sRGB gamut and level of transmission and surround luminance is controlled. Level of surround luminance was 0 to 3 times of peak white for display with 0.5 interval and the transmission were 0, 10, 30, 50 and 70%. 35 combination of transmission and surround luminance was applied to simulated transparent display and the change of display color by each condition was tested. Results: As the result, color gamut is decreased as surround luminance or transmission is increasing. Moreover this increment gives rise to poor image quality as contrast is decreasing. Conclusion: image processing algorithm considering surround condition need to be applied to transparent display. Application: The result of simulation might help to suggest the image quality algorithm.
