Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of weight of load and work/rest schedule on the workload of repetitive upper-limb task. Background: Repetitive arm movement is one of the main occupational risk factors for upper-limb disorders and complaints. Workload of repetitive work is known to be affected by several work factors including posture, weight of load, frequency and duration. With regard to the frequency and duration, it has been known that short and frequent breaks are more effective in recovering from fatigue, while workers seem to prefer longer and less frequent breaks. Method: Eighteen participants completed one-hour repetitive tasks with varying work/rest schedule and weights of load. We measured surface EMG, maximum grip force and subjective rating of discomfort at the right arm while performing the repetitive task. Results: Ratings of discomfort were shown to increase as the time passes, while no significant changes were found in grip strength according to the time. The EMGs of the upper trapezius and biceps brachii showed the muscular fatigue as the time passes. The effect of weight of load was found in anterior deltoid and biceps brachii, in which median frequencies decreased as the weight decreased. Some interactions between work/rest schedule and weight of load were found to be significant in the shoulder and lower-arm muscles. Conclusion: The effects of the weight of load and work/rest schedule on the muscular activities were found in the shoulder and lower arm, while their effects were not significant in the rating of discomfort. The work conditions do not seem to be sufficient to induce significant muscular fatigue so that we can get an informative result. A further study would be necessary with a larger number of subjects. Application: This study is expected to be applied in evaluating musculoskeletal work hazards survey of repetitive upper-limb tasks.
