Kampong Bharu, an area within Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, is a preserved area for Malay ethnic settlement where many valuable vernacular houses exist since the early 1900s, with relatively slow development compared to other areas. This area is located at the capital city"s downtown area, but development was limited since this area was managed under special autonomous right. Partial developments took place at the Kampong Bharu where traditionality was preserved since it is an agriculture based town due to urbanization.
According to the author’s previous studies (Ju et al, 2012), the houses of Kampong Bharu can be classified into four major types: the traditional vernacular house, the colonial vernacular house, the modern vernacular house and the modern international style house.
This study was conducted prior to the task of identifying the vernacular elemant that are inherent to the movern international style house. Representative housing types were identified, and the characteristics of the space organization and elevation design that are manifested as such were identified.
