This study aims to understand how the traditional life styles in Javanese houses have continued or transformed to adapt to modernization and industrialization through the case studies of Javanese houses located in Kotagede, Indonesia. Focused on the six traditional Javanese houses in Kotagede, the measurements of the houses, interviews with residents and observational of life patterns were applied for the methodology of this study. The findings of this study are as follows; First, most of the residents living in the traditional Javanese housing have inherited the property from their parents or relatives. They have maintained the traditional structure and space order following the traditional axis of the north and the south. Second, having a pendapo is not as important anymore since maintain a pendapo costs a lot and public events are not held often in a private house anymore. Therefore the use and its symbolic meaning of a pendapo have weakened. Third, the dalem is not used as frequently as the gandok even though the dalem was a higher order in a traditional hierarchy. The uses of middle senthong have been changed from sacred god’s space to private bedrooms or prayer room for Muslims. Fourth, the gandok is used as the most active living space in nowdays to adopt to the modern lifestyle. As a conclusion, the traditional Javanese housings in Kotagede have maintained its traditional values in the aspect of space and structure. Whereas the pendapo and the dalem, which once have been the most important rooms, have lost its symbolic meanings, the importance of gandok, which is the center of living space and transformed into divided private spaces such as bedrooms, has increased according to modernization.
