In this study, recycled materials, which have been applied to examples of residential space of utilization of recycled material, have been classified. Further, the elements and measurements presented in space in regard to design have been analysed. Through this, the characteristics of design expression of recycled material for design of sustainable residential space have been examined. Firstly, the need of design which utilizes recycled material has been figured out for sustainable design through advanced studies. Further, there needs to be studies carried out on the measurement of expression of material for design to improve the value of residential space through utilization of recycled material. Secondly, eight residential spaces, in which recycled materials have been used, have been investigated. The results indicate that the recycled material utilized include disposed wood, brick, container, sediment of cork and gypsum. Among them, disposed wood is utilized a lot that such material is available everywhere and is convenient for designing cosy and comfortable residential space. Thirdly, the characteristics of design expression of residential space to which recycled material has been applied can be classified into two major categories: direct and indirect expressions. The former presents atmosphere of exterior or interior through colour and texture of raw material while the latter processes raw material to be added with other colour for exterior to harmonize with surrounding environment and for the interior to harmonize with the other finishing material as a whole.
