Widening income disparity has been observed in Hong Kong in recent decades. With neo-liberalist doctrine overshadowing both the economic and social policy and no explicit counteracting social mix policy, Hong Kong is vulnerable to spatial segregation commonly found in North American cities. Yet previous research instead, revealed that while the income structure has become more polarised, spatial segregation between the rich and the poor has on the contrary reduced. It is postulated that both spatial and policy factors may have been at work to create this “unintended” outcomes. High populated density and extensive public housing development are among the most significant factors. This paper will compare the most recent Census data of 2006 and data in 2011 in modelling the impacts of an array of spatial, socio-economic and policy factors on spatial segregation of the rich and the poor households in Hong Kong as well as the changes in such period. Recently developed instruments which makes measurement and modelling of spatial segregation at disaggregated level possible, will be employed in this paper. This paper will also explore the significance of high density living on the spatial segregation / integration of rich and poor households.
