The objective of this study is to determine the current status of residential environment of young and middle-aged adults in single-person households with housing disadvantages in rural areas as well as the quality of life related to mental health, and clarify the factors affecting the quality of life related to mental health through correlation among variables. This study conducted a survey and field observation through face-to-face interviews with 37 housing vulnerable single adults living in Yeongwol, Gangwon-do. The survey was conducted from July to August 2015. The survey contents include 6 items of quality of life related to mental health, as well as general characteristics and residential environment characteristics determined as factors affecting quality of life in previous studies. The data collected were analyzed using the SPSS Statistics program. The results of analysis showed that factors affecting their quality of life were physical health condition, extraneous noise, restroom and bathroom area, and privacy. The results also showed the residential environment characteristics that deteriorated the quality of life related to mental health. This study is significant in that it will be able to obtain social consent on the fact that poor residential environment must be improved for the life of young and middle-aged adults in single-person households with housing disadvantages in rural areas, who must be the key human resources of the society.
