The elderly is the fastest growing portion of Korean population. Independent living is one of the most important issue for the elderly in their house design so that they can successfully cope with aging symptoms such as reduced vision, hearing loss and physical disabilities. The purpose of this study is to investigate similarities and differences in several regulations and guidelines for elderly housing, especially focusing on accessible bathroom, to analyze inaccessible problems in the case houses, and to provide suggestions for bathroom design. In the case houses, improper arrangement of toilet, basin, and bath failed to provide clearance for people with walking aides or wheelchairs. In addition, door direction of entrance and narrow width of openings of doors caused barriers. Based on the guidelines of Lifetime homes, Fair Housing Act and KS criteria, suggestions for bathroom dimension, layout and aiding features are provided so that people with a variety of physical abilities can use and get around bathroom in more convenient and comfortable ways.
