It is interesting to know the differences and similarities of layout in an apartment unit between Korea and China. A layout in an apartment unit seems to be mostly affected by lifestyle of residents and regulation code by legislation. This study investigates the preferences of Shanghai residents about four layout components extracted from a typical Korean apartment layout using 203 questionnaire survey samples: Porch, Kitchen with Living and Dinning room, Multi-functional room, and Balcony. The research findings are as following. Firstly, Shanghai residents show high interest in Multi-functional room as an installation place for laundry machine, Porch as a differential space from living room, Balcony as an optional space for living room, and Kitchen with Living and Dinning room as an integrated open space for implementation of happy home. Secondly, Shanghai male residents show high preferences on storage space and ventilation function composed by LDK integrated design, whereas female residents show high interest in Porch, particularly in Multi-functional room as a space for a supplementary kitchen or for preparation of religious services.
