The purpose of the study was to understand the unique housing culture and decoration style in traditional Java houses. Literature review and site visit were applied for the research method. Java House divided into three parts, and each part is as follows for the decorative properties.
First, the roof of the traditional Java House is the most unique and important decorative element. The shape of roofs called joglo, limasan, kampung and the combination of them are made of roof-tile and have clay carving ornaments on roof top. Ceiling shape follows the shape of oblique roof, which is made of wood to enable air movement and heat lost on roof surface. Ceiling on the central of the room is a thick heap of wood beam (tumpang sari) as heat insulator for rooms because high ceiling position evokes higher room volume. Secondly, the most unique factor in the wall is the gebyok. Wall(gebyok) is made of wood and full of carving ornament. That is an artistic appearance, besides its function as wall decoration, this woodcarving has meshes to provide airflow into building. This meshed woodcarving is also used in doors and ventilation mesh under ceiling. Third, Stratified floor is begin with ground yard, and then veranda that made from hardened clay, and main room constitutes a wood scaffold to provide air circulation and remove the humidity of the ground. The decorations of the pillar stand(umpak) is a unique factor. Locus flower or tumpal is carved into black stone or lime stone.
The outside of the buildings in Java is not decorated by colors or symbols, but they have carvings in the pillars or other parts on the inside. The carving have symbolic meanings and colors are only used in temples, pavilion or in royal housings.
