The purpose of the study was to analyze the planning characteristics and its application of foreign homeless shelters. A document research method and case studies were used to analyze and classified the spatial characteristics and types of homeless shelters. The types and characteristics of foreign homeless shelters were divided into four aspects: (1)"General shelter type" for the homeless support themselves with specialized spaces such as private, public and support sevice areas, (2)"Rental housing type" for the target users needed affordable social housing, (3)"Existing building using type" for the users in temporary dwelling space for short period of time and vacant properties, (4)"Boarding house type" for the youth. This study shows that the development of various types of the homeless shelters as social affordable housing will be more ideal in homeless shelters planning rather than relying on just one type of general shelter type in poor surroundings for its domestic application.
