The “living-near families” means parents and married-children’s families live close and keep geographical proximity. This study was conducted to analyze types of familial interactions, level of satisfaction for the living-near families in Myun-mok-doing, Junrang-gu in Seoul. 24 females who are living close to their parents participated in face-to-face interviews for this study. Primary findings are as follows: (1) Average travel time between parents and children was 10-15 minutes without considering transportation modes. (2) Average housingsize and the number of family members for children’s and parents’ families were 77㎡ (3.79 persons) and 103㎡ (2.62 persons) respectively, which showed a double-density to children’s families. (3) Both generations were satisfied with living-near families. In particular, living close to their parents showed higher satisfaction than living close to parents-in-laws. But, the proximity to their parents negatively affected the satisfaction with privacy. When living close to both parents, the respondents also showed emotional pressure to keep the balance in familial interactions between their parents and in-laws. (4) Major driven factors to discontinue living-near to their parents were respondents’ children’s education or spouse’s job-related relocations which were rather external factors than internal ones. But, the main reasons they discontinued living-near to their in-laws were emotionally driven, such as conflicts between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. (5) Married-children visited parents much more frequently than vice versa. They regarded their parents’ houses as the sharing spaces for the entire family members and used the spaces for diverse residential activities.
