This study aims to investigate how fourteen beginning-level ESL students generate negotiated interaction in task-based synchronous computer-mediated communication. In order to analyze quantitative and qualitative data, two models for negotiated interaction were incorporated: Long’s (1983) and Varonis & Gass’s (1985). The results showed that only a few instances (10%) were served as negotiated interaction. Among these negotiated interactions, 24% negotiation was recognized as modified interactions. With respect to the task type effect, the students outperformed in jigsaw task rather than information-gap and decision-making tasks. The qualitative result suggests that the students reported their preference for the jigsaw and its beneficial effect over the other tasks, as expected from the quantitative analysis. Relatively little negotiated interaction can be attributed to the students’ efforts of maintaining social relationships such as face-saving actions deeply involved in the process of negotiated interaction in SCMC.
