This paper presents an investigation into the modifications of idioms, whose basic attributes include idiomaticity, fixedness, lexicalization, and reproducibility. Here, idiomaticity refers to the irreversible solidity between the components of idioms, but it is not really absolute and instead very relative in idioms. The study first demonstrated why the idiom structures were not absolute but relative and then explained the relativity of idioms in two ways. Burger et al. categorized idioms into variations and modifications according to the degree of deviation from what was fixed. Variations are morphologic and syntactic changes with no loss of idiomatic meanings, whereas modifications are second idioms newly and tentatively creased based on the basic idiom frames.Focusing on the variations and modifications of idioms, the present study especially delved into differences in concept and usage between the two predications and also their creation conditions and functions. The study presented examples of all types of modifications cited from German newspapers and magazines at the end.
