This paper aims to examine the effects and necessity of TOEIC classes as liberal arts education courses. The research was initiated based on data from D University, and expanded specifically by collecting more data from a questionnaire from 107 students as well as interviews from 18 students. The findings revealed that TOEIC classes had meaningful effects on students` listening and reading skills. However, the positive effects did not extend to speaking and writing because TOEIC classes contained mostly repetitive practices of listening and reading strategies within insufficient speaking and writing activities. 37.4% of the students surveyed considered TOEIC courses to be necessary and helpful in terms of their economic status and easy access to the courses. On the other hand, 51.4% of the students also recognized the importance of the TOEIC, but pointed out its reliability and validity as a measuring tool of communicative competency. They emphasized that liberal arts education should provide diverse courses of in-depth and inspiring training which encourages students` academic motivation.
