The purpose of this study was to investigate what mechanisms would work on word order constraints in the first and second position making up a binomial idiom The aspects addressed in the previous studies usually focused on the phonological and semantic constraints. This study focused on psychological mechanisms, a motive behind the constraints in the phonological and semantic aspects. The study first examined which nonsense sequences the hearers would prefer as nonsense sequences made a pair with the "phoneme monitoring test (PMT)", which is the most efficient way to check the ease of perceptual processing, in order to see what psychological mechanisms would work on the word order constraints in a pair of positions in binomial idioms based on the phonological principles. As a result, the hearers` reaction time was shorter with the syllables of stress or high frequency in the first position of the twin structure, and they preferred the word order structure of monosyllable + disyllable known as "Panini`s Law" to that of disyllable + monosyllable. Those findings are attributed to the fact that relatively shorter phonological elements impose less psychological burdens than longer ones and serve as a preparation stage to accept big information. The investigator then examined the semantic aspect, the second part working on the word order constraints in the twin structure, with a focus on the opposition units such as "vertical vs. horizontal", "up vs. down" and "right vs. left". It was examined what psychological mechanisms would work when a unit preceded another in a pair structure. The investigator looked into how the semantic principle of "vertical" preceding "horizontal" could be interpreted based on the principle. The working motives turned out to be "verticalhoriwntal illusion" and "unique patterns of human behavior". In the twin structure of "up vs. down", "up" usually comes before "down" because of the "visual perception and performance" of human beings working inside psychologically. Finally, "right" comes before "left" in the twin structure of "right vs. left" because the biological origins and social customs of human behavior have huge psychological impacts inside. Those findings will serve valid purposes in relation to the various phonological and semantic factors in Fnglish and other languages.
