In this paper, the accusative case marker in Korean is explicated based on its use-as a canonical case marker and as a pragmatic marker. Based on an autonomous modular grammar, morphological and syntactic properties of the accusative case marker is formalized. According to the lexical entry proposed in this paper, the case marker is morphologically and syntactically category-free. Various semantic aspects of the accusative marker are explicated whose use is not to express a grammatical relation but is pragmatically motivated. It is argued that the pragmatic use of the accusative marker is still intended to increase transitivity. Such pragmatically motivated transitivity is achieved by intensifying affectedness, expressing intentionality, simple emphasis, or transitivization involving holistic or telic effect. The phenomenon in which a grammatical element is used as a pragmatic marker is not an isolated one. In some languages, causative morphemes are used to evoke pragmatic effects. Both these causative morphemes and the accusative marker used pragmatically share the fact that their canonical functions are related to transitivity.
