A number of studies have employed Brown and Levinson`s politeness framework, but these do not really examine how discernment politeness can be strategically exploited, especially in interactional discourse contexts. Brown and Levinson also have not explored how cultural values influence the expression of discernment. Filling this knowledge gap is important given the ongoing and multi-faceted interaction of language and culture, and because parameters change both in number and relative intensity among cultures. In this analysis, naturally-occurring data derived from institutional contexts were used and analyzed qualitatively by employing the Confucian framework. Findings herein highlight three important aspects of Korean honorific use in relation to linguistic politeness. First, cultural values reflecting the speaker`s intention can control the magnitude of imposition on a discursive level. Second, these cultural values can function as another linguistic constraint, since the cultural knowledge underlying the notion of over-deference triggers culturally shared thinking and influences the perception of linguistic politeness. These common values function as a supplemental R (ranking of imposition) variable and allow culturally shared knowledge (the cultural script) to ground individual frameworks, which in turn directly control power and distance variables.
