This paper examines the use and distribution of exclamations as a discourse marker in conversational Korean. A corpus of the Sejong Corpus was used to search for the tokens of exclamations as a discourse marker, and the meaning and function of each of the instances of the discourse marker were analyzed in light of the context it appeared in. The functions of {a, eo, e, eum, eung, nae, ani} as a discourse marker include having attention, connecting, emphasizing, switching topics and having a turn-taking. These functions, also evidenced in some exclamations, may have derived from the original meaning of {a, eo, e, eum, eung, nae, ani}. Analyses of {a, eo, e, eum, eung, nae, ani} in more diverse contexts and with aural data is needed to obtain a complete picture of its function and distribution as a discourse marker.
