Previous studies in second language (L2) acquisition have examined verbal aspects of L2 speakers although gestures are meaningfully related to L2 speech and acquisition. Hence, it is not well known why L2 speakers produce gestures (i.e., co-speech hand/ arm movements). This study examines why L2 speakers gesture and how L2 proficiency is related to gesture production. I counted representational gestures (i.e., pictorial meaning of a word) and compared the gesture rate per 100 words of 16 intermediate and 16 advanced L2 English speakers: (1) intermediate speakers tended to rely more on gestures than advanced speakers and (2) less proficient L2 speakers were more likely to utilize gestures for lexical search, orchestrate and formulate their own L2 discourse by linking the referent to the visual space gesturally. These findings suggest that gestures may activate L2 lexicons and serve a self-regulatory role to mediate speakers` cognition and help verbalization.
