This paper explores several patterns of consonantal lenition such as voicing and spirantization. Given that classic OT always finds the global minimum and thus can even explain the cases that never occur in any natural language, this paper applies the theoretic framework of HS to lenition typology. Unlike classic OT, Harmonic Serialism does not proceed without a harmonically improving gradual path. Relying on HS, this paper maintains that geminate inalterability as one type of the typological gaps in lenition is best explained with the notion of harmonic improvement in which breaking a geminate never improves harmony cross-linguistically. This paper also contends that the reason for the failure of fricative lenition to a nasal, the second typological gap in lenition, is because nasalization fatally violates the gradual divergence in HS. Taken together, this paper finally concludes that lenition in HS is the consequence of harmonic improvement and the gradual divergence, two of the most crucial theoretical frameworks of HS.
