The purpose of this study is to show the syntactic difference of the so-called multiple wh-constructions between English and Spanish. We adopt the Minimalist Program(Chomsky 1998, 1999) for the analysis of the constructions which we are concerned. In Chomsky`s system(1998, 1999), the uninterpretable features of a functional head seek its interpretable counterpart to be deleted via Agree, so the uninterpretable Q-feature of C must be matched with an interpretable Q feature of the wh-element within its domain. In this case, the wh-element possesses an uninterpretable wh-feature, just like Case in DP, which converts it to an appropriate active goal. Nothing is problematic if there is just one wh-element in the construction because both the uninterpretable Q-feature and the uninterpretable wh-element can be deleted. However, if there are more than two wh-elements in the construction, just one element will be the candidate for Agree and the others remain without being eliminated its uninterpretable wh-feature. So we adopt the multiple Agree system proposed by Hiraiwa(2000) for the multiple wh-construction to delete all of the uninterpretable features of the wh-elements. Furthermore, we propose that the free word order of the multiple wh-construction in Spanish(quie´n compro´ que´/ que´ compro´ quie´n) is due to the optional EPP feature of T in this language.
