Leo Tolstoy was one of the greatest writers of the Russian realist literature. In his latter years he had a great emphasis on Christianity. Looking at his short novels as mere fables would have devalued the purpose of his creations. Tolstoy simply taps into the very soul wedding Christian principle to universal human longing and a deeply-anchored sense of hope.
In the short novel 『Ivan the Fool』Tolstoy"s writing style transformed the folk story genre into the an art style, which in turn led him to devotion. He developed a new method for structurally putting motivation words in his new works. One can contemplate over the ideas seen in his folk stories, rather than just simply reading.
His stories were not only for peasants, but for all people who want to establish life’s attitude of love and have the will to act on it. When we think about what we have lived through and how we have lived through it, we also think over the way we should have lived and the values of life. There are many ways to express love and create it. Among them is the one that Tolstoy shows in his short novels.

톨스토이의 대표적인 단편 소설 중 『바보 이반』은 즐거운 삶, 진정한 행복, 의미 있는 삶을 살아가는 것이 어떠한 삶인지를 구체적으로 보여주는 좋은 작품 중 하나라 할 수 있다. 작가는 이 작품을 통하여 그의 톨스토이주의 사상을 바탕으로 한 행복한 삶을 사는 사람의 모습과 함께 그러한 사람들이 함께 실현한 행복한 세계를 제시해주고자 하였다. 교육과 계몽을 목적으로 서민들을 대상으로 창작한 그의 단편소설들에는 민중을 향한 톨스토이의 마음이 그의 작품속에 나타나는 등장인물들의 사회적 배경, 생활묘사들에서도 잘 나타나 있으며, 글의 문체와 구조, 어휘, 표현양식 등 언어적 수단들에서도 잘 드러나 있다.
톨스토이는 단편 소설 『바보 이반』을 통해 민화적이고 설화적인 요소를 가미하여 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 형식과 표현으로 행복한 사람의 형상과 그러한 사람들이 이룩한 이상적인 국가에 대해 보여주고 있다. 무엇보다도 작가는 이전의 다른 단편 소설들에서 보여주는 바와 같이 선행과 관용의 중요성을 강조하고 있으며, 개인적인 ‘선’을 넘어 공동의 선을 추구하면서 함께 행복한 삶을 누릴 수 있는 길을 제시하고 있다. 모범적인 선한 삶을 사는 것이 신의 의지대로 사는 것이라고 본 작가는 쾌락을 버리고, 자신의 주어진 일을 성실히 수행하며 이웃과 더불어 나눔과 베풂을 통해 함께 살아가는 삶을 영위하는 사람이 행복한 사람의 자질이라는 것을 보여줌과 동시에 그러한 사람들이 함께 더불어 살면서 신에 대한 믿음을 가지고 선행, 관용, 인내, 성실한 삶을 실천하면서 공동의 선을 추구한다면 가장 이상적인 국가, 즉, 가장 행복한 국가가 될 수 있다는 것을 말해주고 있다.
