The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of walking exercise on pulse wave??velocity and blood flow velocity of middle cerebral artery in obese women university students. Subjects were divided??into control (n=12) and walking exercise group(n=11). Walking exercise was performed 4 times a week at the??intensity of 60-80% HRmax(1-4 weeks; 60% HRmax, 5-8 weeks; 70% HRmax, 8-12 weeks; 75% HRmax, 13-14??weeks; 80% HRmax). And the change of BMI, Mean blood flow velocity(MFV) of middle cerebral artery, pulselity index (PI), resistance index(RI) and pulse wave velocity(PWV) have been measured before and after 14 weeks of??exercise respectively. Statistical techniques for data analysis were two-way ANOVA to determine the difference??between before and after 14 weeks of walking exercise. After 14 weeks walking exercise, BMI was significantly lower in??walking exercise group than control group. MFV of middle cerebral artery was significantly greater in walking??exercise group than control group. PI and RI were significantly lower in walking exercise group than control group.??PWV were significantly lower in walking exercise group than control group. There was a positive??correlation(r=0.42) between pulse wave velocity and BMI. In conclusion, BMI reduction by long-term walking exercise in??obese women university students increased the central arterial distensibility. The results document the need??to explore relationships between obesity, endothelial function, exercise intensity, and gender in a larger??sample of obese woman.
