Memory is the basic creativity of poetry-writing to Thomas Hardy who can be called the poet of remembrance. He embodies his past experiences or recollections as his work through memory"s eye. To him, memory also becomes the centripetal force of his creative imagination, like a magic. It is a medium to encourage his imagination and is a driving force to stir his inner words and unpack them. And this memory is connected with death. For although with time a mortal being in the world has gone through death which brings oblivion to a remnant being, the memory of a remnant has arisen from the world of oblivion. Therefore, Hardy concentrates on memories, the dead"s traces which are left in the present things, ancestors, heredity, monuments, and so on.
To Hardy, the dead is not shut in his or her death but he or she revives as a living by remembrance or recollections, which can be finally connected with immortality after the last breath. In other words, to Hardy, the dead means death or pain, but he or she is also a paradoxical being which means life in death. Especially his memory about his first wife, Emma who was dead suddenly, becomes an accelerator in his poetical writing, which represents the absolute of death and transforms mortality into immortality at the same time and makes the space of creativity between death and life. Hardy, in his poetry, contemplates on time, memory and death. And he is obsessive about them. But death is a necessary object to look back on life and take a view of it, which is the subject of the present to him.
Therefore, he has a double standpoint to look at "death in life" and "life in death" at the same time. And this makes a connection his view with eternity and creates coexistence.
