The story of “Rasyoumon” written by Akutagawaryunosuke starts when a servant, a main character, is abandoned under Rasyoumon. In fact, the background of the story is a real world surrounded by earthquakes, conflagration, famine and corpses and it, in other words, is the world without God. With absence of God, existing rules, laws and institutions lose their meaning. Moreover, good and evil lose its justification when existence of human beings is on the border between life and death. The servant, who is thrown to the concrete real world, tries to go up to the gate with free will to deal with the problem of existence in life. Then he has an encounter with an old woman above the gate, and feels ‘unforgivable evils’ through the meeting. Meanwhile, he is encouraged by the old woman’s saying and, at the same time, he acquires moral justification which justifies being a thief. It shows he learned logic of life in the world of above the gate. Although, the old woman was defeated in an argument about life and death with the servant, as she goes down from the gate, her independent will and behavior seems to continue during her life even in dark and hopeless death world.
Therefore, it describes the existence of human beings that their ceaseless will toward life when they face new world. It means that the servant in the story is the existence that is thrown to the absurd to pursue. “LIVE” by himself even when God is in absent, and, at the same time, it also illustrates limit of existence of human beings who cannot help but commit the “EVIL” the concept of good and evil such as morals or ethics only has significance when humans consist society and believe in God. If society collapse and human is solitarily on the border between life and death, concept of good and evil may be modified to another one which adapts to the logic of life.
Overall, it is known through the servant in “Rasyoumon” that humans continues to live with independent will even when they are in any kind of the absurd or in despair and frustration. Furthermore, humans live constantly toward actual world and hope for future, and for this reason, I believe existence of human beings is meaningful.
