The relationship between men and women in Zhang Yimou"s films is full of despair, tragedy and disharmony. The relationship between man and woman in Zhang Yimou"s films is not based on true love, instead it is based on deal, rape and inappropriate relationship. So most of the women in these films are the victims of sexual exploitation.
This paper focuses on four themes- distorted sexuality culture, oppressed women, chinless men, absence of love. "Distorted sexuality culture" examines the distorted sexual mind in these films originated from chinese ancient tradition. "Oppressed women" examines the sexual exploitation of women victims and their resistance, courage, and wisdom. "Chinless men" examines the timid and weak chinese men compared to chinese women. "Absence of love" examines the love and desire in unity in chinese traditional culture and literature, also researches the fact chinese people seldom put emphasis on mental love.
The early Zhang Yimou"s films tend to criticize the tradition of china, so some chinese people don"t like them, but these films have high literary value and deep thought. Besides, these three films have much similarity in the point of view, that"s why I write this paper.
