This is a paper to seek for better education methods for sinology by summarizing the design, progress, outcomes, and limitations of the program, called ‘Understanding of Modern China’, one of the global talent training programs of Seoul National University, and then drawing/sharing common issues of the education of sinology with the academic world. This paper aims to seek for a model applicable to the education of sinology in the future. ‘SNU in Beijing’ is an ‘intensive education program for Chinese and Sinology’ for eight weeks(Four weeks in Korea, another four weeks in China) during summer vacation, and especially, the ‘intensive education program for sinology’ is called ‘Understanding of Modern China’.
Currently, the education related to sinology based on the department system has limitations such as lacking in ‘inclusiveness’ and ‘nowness’. In order to overcome them, it is very important to ‘train inclusive experts in China’. In the era of excessive information, the ability to distinguish information about China is essential while also developing the balanced view. The ‘Understanding of Modern China’ of SNU in Beijing has been designed to overcome prejudices against China and the cold-war mindset, and also to have more comprehensive and general thinking, by providing the wide spectrum to understand China as an interdisciplinary platform. Giving a group task of ‘field survey’ in the beginning of the program and also having a time for the whole presentation on the last day, the students" participation in the whole program was maximized on top of ‘Understanding of Modern China’. As the interdisciplinary platform for the education of sinology gives students a room for thinking about modern China, its educational effect is special. At the same time, however, it is hard to control the difficulty of lectures by each expert, and also hard to find the organic connections between lectures. In order to solve them, it is required to have concrete and detailed plans, which should be consulted with lecturers in the planning stage.
