This paper is a review of recent developments in both ADN and HAN-based monopropellant thrusters and their catalytic ignition. Means of analyzing thermal and catalytic decomposition as well as different methods of catalyst support preparation and active phase impregnation are introduced. Catalytic ignition was quite extensively studied in purely chemical analyses for both ionic liquids to determine optimal decomposition temperatures and reaction rates, however, few experiments have to deal with actual thruster applications. Thus, a discussion follows to reconcile the recent results disclosed in U.S. patents and in chemistry and aerospace journals about a key component of green monopropellant thrusters.
