Two things are the leitmotif of this essay: my personal way of experiencing the history of the Korean Studies of Ancient Western History on the one hand, and the present perspective of the field facing complex challenges on the other. Naturally, mention of individual researchers and their works has to be reduced to a minimum.
The first section shows how and why the field fared well since the liberation from the Japanese colonization for about a generation until the late 1980’s, despite the imaginably various handicaps. The historical conditions conducive for the comparatively smooth journey (thus the section was entitled itinera ) were, to name a few, legacy of Japanese colonialism, aspiration for speedy modernization or westernization.
The second section under the subtitle of aspera analyses two lines of challenges, rising both from the outside and inside the field, which seem to be gathering strength to the extent of endangering its sustenance.
In the third section, as the subtitle implies, I advise the younger colleagues in the field to give a thought seriously to finding alternatives (or techniques of survival) by crossing over the frontiers of the field, namely to venturing in the ocean of universal history, while conceding that the future for the ifeld as it has stood so far is fated to withering (hence the subtitlef ata).
