This paper aims to verify the correlations between the japanese loanword, ‘ijime’, used in news reports of "Media Daum", one of major Internet news portals in Korea, and audience"s usage of the word from January 2005 through December 2010. First, this study analyzes whether there are any differences among daily newspapers and TV networks in the usage period and frequency of the japanese loanword, "ijime", which means bullying. This study also investigates the usage period and frequency of "wangtta", Korean slang for "ijime", and its another Korean expression of standard language which means group bullying. In particular, this study examines whether the media"s usage of "ijime", "wangtta", have any correlations with audience"s usage of the words, respectively.
The results show that major Korean newspapers and television networks which provide a massive number of daily news to "Media Daum", use "wangtta" and its another Korean standard language more frequently than the Japanese word, "ijime". This paper has also found that the media"s usage of "wangtta" and its another Korean standard language have positive correlations with audience"s usage of the words, respectively. Especially, regression analyses revealed that the monthly number of news reports using the Korean standard language is a cause of the monthly change of audience"s usage of the term, while no evidence of causal relationships between the words of "ijime" and "wangtta" of news reports and audience were found.
