World Heritage is that the heritage is inscribed on the World Heritage list according to the decision of the World Heritage Committee based on the World Heritage Convention. In the World Heritage, there are cultural heritage, natural heritage and mixed heritage. Cultural heritage is defined as monuments, groups of buildings and sites, and cultural landscapes.
As you see the definition of World Heritage, World Heritage should be dealt from the viewpoints of interdisplinary studies. Indeed, World Heritage is considered by all different academic principles including human, social and natural sciences.
ICOMOS dealing with cultural heritage is consisted of experts among architects, historians, archaeologists, art historians, geographers, anthropologists, engineers and town planners. Many architects have been involved in the conservation of cultural heritage and in the process of inscription of the World Heritage.
As I understand, architects are not only taking care of designing and constructing the buildings and monuments. Architects should also consider the natural environment like topography, terrain, climate and vegetation, cultural and historical backgrounds, and people’s philosophy in the region. Without such a consideration, building is just building. It is not related to human at all.
Architects who would like to work on the World Heritage need to consider not only the building itself but also understanding the building residents. It is because the building might represent the people’s culture in all different time period and available building materials in the region.
